How to collect chama contributions with M-Pesa

Updated 2026-10-18 · 4 min read

Collecting contributions by sending money to the treasurer phone is easy at first and painful later. A proper collection setup keeps group money separate and every payment traceable.

Why phone-to-phone collection breaks down

Group money mixes with personal money, statements are long, and nobody can tell quickly who has paid what. When the treasurer changes, the history changes hands too.

The main M-Pesa options

STK Push sends a payment prompt to the member phone, so the member only enters a PIN. Paybill and Till let members pay to a business number, usually with an account reference such as a member number. Payouts to members, for example approved loans or claims, are done with business-to-customer payments.

Safaricom sets the requirements and charges for getting a Paybill or Till, so check its current terms before you apply.

Match every payment to a member

Use one reference format, for example the member number, and ask members to use it every time. Consistent references let software match payments automatically and flag the ones that do not fit.

Habits that keep the group safe

Keep group funds in a group account, never a personal one. Issue a receipt for every payment, reconcile at least weekly, and require a second person to approve payouts. These habits are easier when the platform records approvals and keeps an audit trail.
